What exactly does the formation of GST Council mean ?

It is the council's responsibility to have one uniform rate of GST tax to be introduced all over India. It will also decide the threshold for levy of the tax, as well as the dispute resolution mechanism.

The GST council will be responsible for deciding various issues including the GST tax rate and how the new tax regime will function. The council will be headed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and members will comprise of state Finance Ministers.

The first meeting of the newly constituted GST Council, which will decide on the rates, exemption and threshold, will be held on September 22 and 23
